A trip to the dentist.

Last week both kids went to the dentist for their cleanings. This is not an easy task with both of the kids and Ronnie's sensory issues. This time it really went well actually, with minimal whining from both children.

Miss Evee was a champ and got her teeth brushed and examined by the dentist with no problems at all. Once again she was cavity free. She is such a good girl when it comes to brushing and flossing.

It's a lot harder for Ronnie with his sensory issues to have things going on in his mouth. Brushing his teeth sometimes is hard for him, so I was expecting a major meltdown. The loud tools, the spray water, and the sound of the power brush, all things that I figured would set him off. He did amazing though, not one meltdown.

Poor Ronnie has one cavity in one of his back molars. The dentist recommended that we come in and get it filled, they had an opening this week so we took it. I figured we could at least try to get it filled but I was pretty sure he wasn't going to let it happen.

The dentist chose to try nitrous to keep him calm for the procedure. They have these nose things that go over the child's nose for them to breathe in the nitrous and they have a smell to them. For some sensory kiddos smells are an issue and having something like strawberry be the only thing you are constantly smelling, its just to much. So we switched to the regular plastic no smell nose piece. This worked for all of about 2 minutes along with the distraction of Frozen on the TV. He wasn't letting any of this happen. We asked him if he would do it without any of the nitrous and he said that he would try, so she tried to put this thing called a "whale tale" in his mouth, its this piece he is supposed to bite down on to keep his mouth open and the teeth dry while they are working in there. This "whale tale" thing was huge! I'm pretty sure that I would have choked on it myself!

I tried to talk him into it but after seeing the size of that thing I wasn't going to fight with him. The tooth doesn't hurt him, I took over brushing for him again, and I'm not into sedating him to fill it. I'm also trying to avoid an all out melt down and making the dentist a bad experience for him. So we just made an appointment for three months from now and we will watch the cavity.

We went home and put in Real Steel, his favorite movie and he fell back asleep until it was time to head to school. Ron fell asleep with us too for a little bit. I slept for the day because I had to work that night.
